Wednesday 9/22
Kenny/Scott, Cathy/Jim (co-wokers) and myself headed out to Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument located off of hwy89. First stop at the Visitor Center then a mile down the road. Turned onto a cinder road for a 1/2 mile. Parked and looked at where we are supose to go. Wow. Its .48 mile hike to the summit and elev of 7500. Up,up we go. Tough one but we did it. Getting to the top is a steep hike on volcanic cinders. Of course at the top was a geocache. Signed the log, great views and it started to rain - time to go. Much faster coming down. The cinder cone is part of the Sunset crater volcanic complex.
After this hike we drove back to hwy 89 to Forest service rd 546 for some geocaching. We found six of them. They were easy to get to and Scott was able to drive up to 30ft for most of them. Time was now 3p and its time to eat. Back to Flagstaff for a early dinner at Garcia. Fun day.
