Adventure log: 3/8 mon -3/10 wed
Left Yuma afternoon about 1pm. Traveling on AZ 95 thur Quartzsite, Parker and Lake Havasu. I like staying at the chev station over nite, intersection of 95 and I-40. Takes about 4 hrs getting here and then another 4 hrs on I-40 to Meteor Crater east of Flagstaff.
Tue: Left about 7:30am, sky is getting dark. Started to rain. Then it starts to snow and I'm only about 3500 elev. Getting kind of nervous so I pulled off at Kingman exit and parked in a small shopping mall and watch the heavy snow coming down. In about 15 min the whole lot has about 2 " of snow. Saw a IHOP sign and walked over there for breakfast. Weather was improving and off I went - back onto I-40. As I am approaching Seligman (about 100 mi into trip) its starts snowing again and heavy. Exit off exit 122 at a truck stop. Wind is really blowing. Waited about an hour and it stopped snowing. Back onto I-40. About 30mi down the road it starts snowing again. Pulled off at exit 144 Ash Fork which is at the base of the mountain. Spoke with a truck driver who stated if I wasn't in a rush stay here overnight since the drive to the top had heavy snow falling , truck/car accident and cars in line. So I stayed put. Turned on the RV generator and I was very comfortable. Only 90 more miles, so close yet so far. Time 4pm
Wed: No new snow during the night. Sky had patches of blue and white cloudes. On the road at 7:30a. The drive up the mountain, going from 5100 to 7300 elev, was awesome. It was like a winter wonder land. So white. Trees covered in lots of snow. Road condition was good. From the peak to Williams is the area where traffic accidents occur when the weather is bad. Flagstaff area had tons of snow. About 3o miles pass Flagstaff, less and less snow on the ground. Finally arrived at Meteor Crater RV park about 9:40am. Everyone was happy to see me since I was calling them on my travels. After getting the RV setup went to the Visitor Center to check in with Chris our site/mgr to get my uniforms and keys since I have to start work on thursday.
Have to say this was'nt a fun trip. At times I had white knuckles. But got here safe and sound with no incidents. Didn't have my camera to take pictures while traveling thru the mountains, to bad because it was so beautiful.
